Gum Health Care

If you are concerned about your gum health, the team at Tribeca Dental can advise, treat, and provide support and guidance to help you reverse early gum disease. We encourage regular check–ups and professional cleaning to keep gum disease under control or eliminated completely.

Gum (periodontal) disease is inflammation and infection affecting the gum, deeper connective tissue, and bone structure (periodontal tissues) that surround and support your teeth. It is a widespread condition that affects most people at some stage during their life and is a major cause of tooth loss in adults.

It occurs when dental plaque and calculus deposits accumulate at or below the gum line level of the tooth. The bacteria present in the deposits produces toxins causing damage and destruction of the periodontal tissues. Poor oral hygiene, such as infrequent or ineffectual brushing and flossing, along with irregular visits to your dentist are common causes of gum disease.

The bacteria that causes tooth decay and gum disease can enter your body and effect other parts of your body, such as your heart. Chronic gum inflammation and infection (gingivitis and periodontitis) may increase your risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and other inflammatory conditions.

The two stages of gum disease, from least to most severe, are gingivitis and periodontitis.

Gingivitis is the first stage of gum disease and occurs at the gum line level of the tooth. It is reversible and with early detection, gingivitis is easily treated and can be eliminated by professional removal of plaque and calculus supported by good oral hygiene practices, daily brushing and flossing at home.

If the problem is left it may progress to periodontitis which causes loss of gum attachment and bone. In its early stages, periodontitis does not cause pain and can progress unnoticed. In most cases, periodontal disease responds well to treatment and despite the destruction being largely irreversible, its progression can be halted. Early intervention minimises or helps avoid a more complex and costly treatment.

Early gum disease is usually painless, so it is important to be aware of any of the following symptoms:

Red, swollen or puffy gums
Bleeding gums during brushing and flossing
Spontaneous bleeding
Sore or tender gums
Bad breath
Receding gums

Root Canal Treatment

Root canal treatment is the removal of an inflamed or infected nerve within the roots of the tooth.

Inflammation or infection can have a variety of causes: deep decay, repeated dental procedures on the tooth, trauma, or a crack in the tooth. If left untreated it can cause severe pain or lead to an abscess and swelling as the infection spreads to the gums or the jaw bone.

While this treatment is often assumed to be a painful procedure, the reality is with new developments in techniques, technology, and pain-relief, root canal treatment can be comfortable and effective, with a success rate as high as 90%. Where possible, you should always consider treatments to save your teeth, rather than the alternative of removal of a tooth.

During root canal treatment, which is carried out under local anaesthetic, the inflamed or infected nerve tissue is removed, and the inside of the tooth is decontaminated and cleaned, then filled and sealed. Afterwards, the tooth is restored with a crown or an overlay for protection, leaving it as good as new.

Six signs that can indicate you may need root canal treatment are:

Spontaneous, severe pain in your mouth which disrupts sleep
Extreme sensitivity to hot and cold foods or drinks
Pain when biting or chewing on a tooth
Gum surrounding affected tooth appears swollen
Facial swelling is present

Inlays and Onlays

Dental Crowns

Bridges

A dental bridge may be a suitable alternative to implants or removable partial dentures, when replacement of one or more missing teeth is required.

Over time, missing teeth can cause a change in your bite, unfavourable movement of your teeth, increased loading on your remaining teeth, and greater risk of decay and gum disease.

Although the cosmetic impact of missing teeth is often of concern, the greater issue is its impact on the ability to chew food and the maintenance of healthy gums when teeth surrounding the gap begin to shift. A dental bridge provides significant aesthetic and practical benefits, restoring chewing function and oral health.

Typically, a bridge spans the space created by one or more missing teeth. They require shaping of the teeth on each side of the space. Crowns are placed over the prepared teeth and are joined by the replacement tooth, with the false tooth forming a bridge. This is permanently bonded to the prepared teeth. A bridge is the preferred treatment when teeth adjacent to the space are heavily restored and structurally weak, worn or eroded.

Our whitening treatments, in-chair Zoom3 and professionally dispensed at-home whitening systems, are effective and proven to give you the best and lasting results.

In-chair Zoom3 whitening can improve the colour of your teeth in a short period of time. This procedure involves a carefully controlled application of a high concentration of peroxide gel to the teeth, after the gums have been protected with a paint-on gum barrier. The peroxide remains on the teeth for three 15 minute intervals. From start to finish the process takes approximately 90 minutes. While results are immediate, we include our take-home whitening kit to help you achieve optimal results and for maintenance of your brighter, whiter teeth.

At home-whitening is our most popular and affordable whitening service, giving you the flexibility and convenience of whitening your teeth at home. Customised-trays are fabricated from moulds of your teeth. The peroxide gel is carefully placed in the tray and worn over your teeth. Depending on the gel concentration, the trays are worn for an hour or overnight and is repeated for up to 10-14 days.

Both in-chair Zoom3 and at-home whitening offer excellent results – it really comes down to personal preference.

Night Guard for Bruxism, Clenching and Jaw Pain

Bruxism is the involuntary grinding of teeth and clenching of jaw muscles usually during sleep and times of stress. Some individuals even do this when they are awake. It is a common condition, affecting over 90% of the population, with many unaware of the damage this causes.

When it occurs, the upper and lower jaws clench together, with up to five times greater force than during normal chewing activity, causing overload of the teeth, jaw muscles, and jaw joint.

Over an extended period, bruxism can lead to excessive and accelerated wear and cracks in teeth, broken restorations, increased teeth sensitivity and tooth mobility, as well as damage to the jaw joint. Significant stress on your jaw muscles and joint can cause pain when chewing, persistent headaches; jaw, facial and neck pain; tight, tired and sore facial muscles when you wake up, along with clicking or locking within the joint.

Our professionally designed and custom-fitted mouthguard provides effective protection for your mouth and teeth. If you play any contact sport or participate in activities where there is risk of trauma to the face, you risk serious dental injury. Dental injury includes damage to the gums, lips or teeth, tooth fractures, and knocked-out teeth. These injuries can lead to potentially extensive and costly dental treatment.

Mouthguards work by absorbing and spreading the forces arising from damaging impacts, which prevent, or minimise the severity of a dental injury.
